These pictures are perennials in my portfolio. I love the emotion, the action, and the color.

At the time of this shoot, I was playing with hard light on every shoot: blending strobe with ambient, not really worrying about where in the scene the lights mixed or how the colors blended (or didn’t). The effect is a bit rough to my eye now, but the pictures have a good feeling. The light in this case is a Streaklight 320 with 4″ reflector.

These days, I tend to blend strobe and ambient “in the air” by bouncing my light off the ceiling or wall, and/or placing it in the same direction as an existing light source (window, lamp, ceiling fixture). But looking at these pictures now, I think this “direct” look has a lot of room for exploration. Thinking about where I place the strobe + adding some other sources + maybe gelling one or both lights to give me a little more control over the background.

I shot this story for Birmingham Magazine (RIP) in 2015. Many thanks to the crew at Breadworks. It’s a great lunch spot I haven’t visited in some time. Need to rectify that.
